Stuffy Voiceover: Effective Remedies for Seasonal Allergies to Keep Your Voice Clear

Spring is an amazing time of the year, but for many, it brings along the bothersome issue of seasonal allergies. If you're a voiceover artist (or hire them), you likely know how important it is to keep your nasal passages clear. I’m also a gardener and had to find peace with my career and my favorite hobby along with the other allergens spring brings. In this blog post, you’ll find a compiled list of some vetted remedies to help you combat seasonal allergies, relieve nasal congestion, and keep your voice in top shape. Get ready to speak clearly and enjoy the season to the fullest!

  1. Understand Seasonal Allergies: To effectively deal with seasonal allergies, it's essential to understand what triggers them. Common allergens include pollen, grass, mold spores, and dust mites. By identifying things that trigger your allergies, you can take steps to minimize affects on your voice and vocal performance.

  2. Keep Your Environment (and studio!) Clean: Maintaining a clean living environment can significantly reduce the impact of allergens on your nasal passages. Regularly dust and vacuum your home, especially areas where allergens tend to accumulate, such as carpets, upholstery, and curtains. Consider using allergen-proof fabric when sound proofing your studios- and throw them in the wash once in a while. I have some pillows in my studio that I’ll take down this weekend and clean.

  3. Manage Indoor Air Quality: Improving indoor air quality is crucial for allergy sufferers. Use air purifiers equipped with HEPA filters to capture airborne allergens effectively. Keep windows closed during peak pollen times, and consider using a dehumidifier to control mold growth. I like to use incense in my home but don’t most days because of the smoke and irritation to my sinuses.

  4. Nasal Irrigation: Nasal irrigation is a simple yet effective method to clear nasal passages and relieve congestion. Use a saline solution or a neti pot to flush out irritants and allergens from your nasal passages. This practice not only helps alleviate symptoms but also keeps your vocal cords moist and your voice clear. I can’t seem to get my body to agree to this method. The water just comes back out of my nose but if you can, I hear it’s aces!

  5. Steam Therapy: Steam therapy is a soothing remedy that can provide instant relief from nasal congestion and help maintain vocal clarity. Boil water, pour it into a bowl, and place a towel over your head to create a tent. Lean over the bowl, allowing the steam to penetrate your nasal passages. You can add a few drops of essential oils like eucalyptus or peppermint for an additional calming effect. This is a preferred method of mine and can be a relaxing time too.

  6. Stay Hydrated: Hydration is vital for overall health and maintaining vocal clarity. Drinking plenty of water keeps your nasal passages moisturized and helps thin mucus secretions, making it easier to clear your airways. Opt for warm beverages like herbal teas or warm water with honey and lemon to provide extra relief to your throat and vocal cords. In Colorado, it’s so dry, you can’t leave the house without a water bottle. None of us (voiceovers) should anyway though.

  7. Allergy Medications: Over-the-counter antihistamines and nasal sprays can provide temporary relief from seasonal allergy symptoms. Consult with a healthcare professional to determine the right medication for you. Be aware of any potential side effects that may affect your voice, such as dryness or throat irritation, and use them sparingly as directed. For some reason Clariton works best for me. Try a new brand! Ya never know.

Conclusion: Don't let seasonal allergies dampen your voice or hinder your business and performance this spring. By understanding your triggers and implementing these remedies, you can effectively clear your nasal passages, reduce congestion, and maintain vocal clarity. Experiment with different approaches to find what works best for you. Remember, a clear voice is a confident voice and… a working voice! So breathe easy and embrace spring with all it has to offer.
